Open-cell foam insulation in Laredo TX - rooms that hold the cool you pay for

Hot upstairs and a power bill that climbs every summer? Open-cell foam seals and insulates your attic at once, so cooling stays in the rooms.

HVAC unit and silver ducts sit beneath thick white spray foam insulation between wooden attic rafters.

Is open-cell spray foam right for your Laredo home?

Open-cell foam insulation is sprayed in place in Laredo attics and walls, where it expands into the gaps and, once it's thick enough, stops air leaks while it slows heat, so the cooling you pay for stays in your rooms.

Most calls start with a room that won't cool down, usually upstairs or over the garage, and a power bill that keeps climbing while the AC runs all afternoon. I'm the owner of SealWell Laredo Insulation Company, and we work in Laredo and the cities around it. The price turns on how many square feet we spray, how thick the foam goes, whether old material has to come out first through insulation removal, and what covering the foam needs where it ends up. The schedule turns on that same cleanup, the weather the foam needs to cure and how long your household has to be out of the house. I measure all of it when I come out and write the estimate out so you can see what's included.

How we install open-cell foam insulation

I start in the attic with a flashlight, because I want to see what's up there before anything goes in. If the old insulation got soaked or is full of droppings, it comes out first, since new foam over a mess just buries the problem. I also ask early whether your ducts run through the attic, because that decides whether sealing it with open cell makes sense for you. When it does, we spray the underside of the roof deck and close off the soffit, ridge and gable vents, so the attic becomes part of the cooled house instead of an oven sitting on top of it. We keep the foam as thick at the edges as in the middle, then cover it with the right barrier for the spot it ends up in. Foam burns, so the building codes usually want drywall between it and the rooms you live in, while an attic or crawl space can often take a lighter covering called an ignition barrier. Then we clean up and air the house out.

A few of our calls come from business owners, and we spray shops, offices and warehouses as part of our commercial insulation work. When cold floors trace back to the space under the house, a crawl space vapor barrier on the ground usually comes first, so moisture from the dirt isn't working against the insulation above it.

A sealed attic, when your ducts live up there

If your AC ducts run through the attic, foam under the roof deck brings them inside the cooled space instead of leaving them in the heat. That's the case where foam's higher price usually pays its way, and it's the one I recommend it for.

Seal the gaps and top up, when they don't

If your ducts aren't in the attic, I'll usually tell you to skip the foam. Sealing the gaps around lights, pipes and the hatch, then topping up with blown-in insulation, costs less and usually gets you most of the way.

Why Laredo homeowners call SealWell Laredo Insulation Company for open-cell foam

The owner looks and writes the estimate

I come out myself, climb into your attic and write the estimate, so the person pricing your job has actually seen the gap. On install day I work alongside our small crew, which means the plan doesn't get lost between the estimate and the spray gun.

Learned on a crew, on our own since 2023

I spent years at a desk before deciding I'd rather work with my hands, and my old chair still hasn't forgiven me. I learned insulation on another contractor's crew, then we started our own business in 2023. That's 3 years of attics.

Open-cell foam insulation in Laredo and the city's permit rules

In Laredo, the contractor you hire usually pulls the building permit, and a homeowner who pulls one is treated as the contractor on the project. Whether your foam job needs one is a question for the city's Building Development Services, and we sort that out before we start. When a permit is needed, we pull it as your contractor and handle the paperwork with them. The city also expects construction to meet the codes it lists, including its residential and energy codes, and its building department has posted a policy update on ceiling insulation requirements, so we work within the current version of those rules.

Around Laredo we see plenty of houses with the ductwork in the attic and rooms over the garage that bake by afternoon, which is exactly where the duct question matters most. We work in Laredo and the cities around it, and you can read more about our insulation work across Laredo.

Questions Laredo homeowners ask about open-cell foam

How much does open-cell foam insulation cost in Laredo?

Open-cell foam insulation in Laredo usually costs about $1,600 to $2,400 for 1,000 square feet sprayed 3 inches thick. That's the area's going rate, not our quote. Closed-cell foam costs more per board foot, which is a square foot an inch thick, so open cell is the cheaper of the two by that measure. Your written estimate shows what's included for your space.

Should I seal my attic with open-cell spray foam in Laredo?

It makes the most sense when your ductwork runs through the attic. Federal research on sealed attics found the strongest case for those homes, but it also suggests that in hot, humid climates a sealed attic can leave a house more humid and less comfortable than a vented one. I weigh the savings against that comfort risk with you before recommending it.

How long do we have to stay out of the house after spray foam?

Plan for everyone, kids and pets included, to be out while the foam is sprayed and to come back only after it has cured and the house has been aired out and cleaned. For professional two-part foam, some makers recommend 24 hours before residents move back in, though it varies by product. I'll tell you before install day how long our product needs.

What causes spray foam insulation to cure badly?

Temperature and humidity are the usual culprits, because both play a big part in how spray foam cures. That's why it's worth asking any contractor which time of year and which weather suit the job where you live. Ask me, and I'll explain when I'd schedule yours and why.

Is open-cell or closed-cell foam better for a house in Laredo?

Open cell is usually the better fit for a Laredo house. One foam maker's guide says either type can be used anywhere, but southern, milder climates suit open cell best. Closed-cell foam is denser and blocks moisture, so we save it for the spots that need that.
